We all know her as one of the most versatile and bold female actor who made her mark among critics and boxoffice especially in patriarchal Industry. She carries the capability to make a hit on her own shoulder without any “Khan” or “Kapoor”. She just need a great story and amazing character to play on screen and she will amaze you like never before. VIDYA BALAN. Lets talk about some of her “Out of the Box” Characters played by her.
Vidya Bagchi or whatever her real name was, she was the real meaning of durga in the movie. She came like an innocent pregnant woman who was searching for her husband and later she came out as the real box of secrets. Only vidya knows how to handle a character with so many layers.
She decides not to be a victim when she got pregnant. She decides to give birth to her baby without getting married. She decides to complete her studies while she was pregnant. She decides to take care of her child independently. She is the face of modern Indian women, who doesn’t need any man to complete her.
Reshma- The Dirty Picture
In this whole pretentious world, if you are asked to play a character who says whatever going through her mind then it become something so bold that cannot be carry on screen without killing your all inhibitions. Vidya while playing Silk was so fierce that it was very difficult for so-called broad minded males to accept this character. Standing Ovation for Vidya to Play something that no actress ever dared to play on screen.
Sabrina- No One Killed Jessica
Playing real-life character on screen is always challenging as it will always be compared with real one. But Vidya knows how to get into the skin of the character. If you watch this movie again then pay yours to vidya’s body language, her walking gait, her silent expressions and especially her dialogue delivery. That’s the sign of a classic actor to create a character on screen.
Sulochna – Tumhari Sulu
“Main Kar Sakti Hai” Definitely only Vidya can do that. Playing a fat, married, uneducated, housewife and still, we all are hooked into her story. Tumhari sulu was all about the sulu which brought to life by Vidya. The most entertaining character played by her on screen.
Ya that was not a lead role but playing a character who is handicapped but still have her own vision, ambitions, desire and especially perspective is a tricky thing. On the very initial time of her career, she chooses an unattractive supporting character to play but didn’t we loved her in this movie?
This was the most layered character she played on screen. Krishna seemed to be sympathetic but actually having secondary motives. A window who was horny at times. Sarcastic and fearless. She knows how to play with peoples emotions. Vidya played Krishna as like no one can do it better than her. Unapologetically.

She might have been under the radar for her poor General Knowledge, but her power-packed acting skills have more than compensated for it. She is bold, dynamic and slap-happy. In just a period of five years, the youngest of the Bhatt clan has managed to establish herself as one of the leading ladies of Bollywood. Today, as Alia Bhatt celebrates her twenty-fourth birthday, let us take a look at five of her best films till date:
5) 2 States – Ananya Swaminathan
The movie might have been titled ‘2 States’, but Alia’s performance as the bubbly, chirpy and strong-headed Ananya won people’s heart all over India. Loosely based on the novel by the same name, the story revolves around a Punjabi boy, Krish and a Tamilian girl, Ananya who fall for each other. How they manage to break past the barriers of cultural differences is what the film is all about. Upon release, the film was an instant hit with the youth and Alia won huge critical acclaim for her effortless performance!
4) Kapoor and Sons – Tia Malik
This movie boasted of one of the best ensembles of last year. The story revolves around two estranged brothers who return to their dysfunctional family after their grandfather suffers a cardiac arrest and how they manage to overcome their inner conflicts to come together for a family photo. Despite a short screen-time and the presence of a refulgent ensemble, Alia managed to hold her own. She managed to create magic every time she appeared on the screen and left us craving for more of her. The film went on to win several awards and gave us the party anthem of the year, ‘Kar Gayi Chull’!
3) Highway – Veera Tripathi
Given an unconditional pairing of Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, the film was bound to have a good pre-release hype. While people were quite skeptical about her performance, she proved everyone wrong. She stunned everyone with her portrayal of Veera Tripathi, the daughter of a rich business tycoon, who is abducted by Mahabir Bhati and how she falls for her abductor during the course of her journey. Alia’s nuanced performance, especially towards the climax was appreciated by all and won her the Filmfare Award (Critics Choice). The film also marked Alia’s debut as a singer!
2) Dear Zindagi – Kaira
How many times have you seen someone work with a Khan and steal the limelight all by herself? Well, our Bhatt girl did exactly the same with Shahrukh Khan in last year’s sleeper hit, ‘Dear Zindagi’. The movie witnessed Alia playing the role of Kaira, a budding cinematographer, who is discontented with her life until she meets Jug, a psychologist who helps her gain a new perspective on life. The movie was praised for its thoughtful and inspiring content, and particularly for Alia’s breakthrough performance. The film won her several nominations as well!
1) Udta Punjab – Kumari Pinky
This one is, undoubtedly, Alia’s best performance till date. As a girl saddled with poverty and a victim of sexual abuse, Alia’s emotionally drafting performance was personally my favorite performance of the year. The movie, which deals with the harshness in the realms of drug-soaked Punjab, depicts four lives intermingled in the drug-trafficking act. Movie-goers were definitely in for a treat while watching a deglamorized self of Alia deliver a blockbuster performance. The movie fetched her many awards, most notably the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Way to go, girl!

He might be turning fifty-two, but he can gracefully get into the skin of a twenty-something college student. While other actors of his age have chosen to get stereotyped and play similar characters time and again, this man dons different avatars every time he appears on the silver screen. Not just acting, he has ventured into direction and production as well and churned out gold in every field he has crapshoot into. Yes, you’ve guessed it right. We are talking about Aamir Khan- the flag-bearer of some of the finest Bollywood films! Today, as he celebrates his fifty-second birthday, let us take a look at some of his finest films till date:
There was a time when Aamir was a lesser star and his films didn’t always meet the same fate as they do now. And it was during this period that Bollywood witnessed one of the finest, yet underrated cop-dramas of all times. The story of a young medical student, who quit his studies and joined the IPS to avenge the death of his brother, was entertaining as well as hard-hitting. Aamir’s portrayal of A.C.P Ajay Singh Rathore is one of the most memorable roles till date, not because it was another ‘Dabangg’ or ‘Singham’, but because it had a more realistic touch to it. The movie was awarded a National Award as well!
9) Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar
This film is special for two reasons- first, it strengthened Aamir’s status in mainstream cinema and second, it gave us one of the finest love songs in the form of ‘Pehla Nasha’. It is the story of a poor carefree college student, Sanjay who comes face to face with his responsibilities following his brother’s accident and how he breaks past all barriers to win his girl’s heart and the Inter-College Marathon Cycle Race. The film was admired by one and all (especially the youth) and it went on to win the Filmfare Award for best film.
8) Andaz Apna Apna
The first thing that might have struck your mind is ‘Crime Master Gogo’ or ‘Mogambo ka Bhatija’. But Andaz Apna Apna is way above its hilarious dialogues. A cornball classic tale of two friends Amar and Prem, who want to get rich by marrying a rich heiress and the journey that follows thereafter, could undoubtedly be declared as one of the best comedies produced in India. The film went on to achieve a ‘cult’ status and won Aamir a Filmfare Nomination.
Who knew that Aamir could create ripples at the box office with his alien avatar! But as expected, Aamir’s curious, yet bone-tickling take on God and God-Men found a way into people’s heart. A beautifully crafted narrative, engraved with chunks of humor as well as emotions, was something which left a hard-hitting impact on the audience. It was one of the highest grossing films of all times until it was recently dethroned by another Aamir starter, Dangal!
6) Dil Chahta Hai
This coming-of-age drama about three friends Aakash, Sameer and Siddharth, who share a deep bond but are separated due to certain conflicts and how they finally reunite, shall always hold a special place in my heart. This National Award winning film not only paved the way for thousands of other movies of this genre but also made Goa a favorite youth destination. And frankly, we couldn’t have asked for more!
5) Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
Lagaan is not just a movie; it is an emotion that flows through the hearts of millions of Indians. Set in the period of British Raj in India, the story revolves around a small village whose inhabitants, burdened by high taxes, find themselves in an extraordinary situation as an arrogant officer challenges them to a game of Cricket as a wager to avoid taxes. Aamir’s portrayal of Bhuvan was simply spot-on and it was perhaps his career defining performance! Lagaan became the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Awards and was honored with eight National Awards and nine Filmfare Awards amongst others.
4) Rang De Basanti
How often do you see a film which knocks up the patriotism in your blood and leaves you teary-eyed with its heart-wrenching climax? This hard-hitting drama is about five friends who have been selected to portray Indian Freedom Fighters in a documentary and how an unfaithful chain of events awakens the patriotism in them. Aamir’s character Daljeet was an instant hit with the masses and so was the parallelism that drove the narrative. The film won a BAFTA nomination and was declared the ‘Best Picture’ at the Filmfare Awards!
3) 3 Idiots
The recipe for a perfect entertainer, amidst the backdrop of a social message can only be found in an Aamir Khan film! My personal favorite, Aamir Khan’s portrayal of Ranchoddas who has a refreshing outlook towards life, was loved by one and all. The rejuvenating plot (with a fair share of ‘flashbacks’) and some brilliant performances by the ensemble helped earn this film three National Awards and five Filmfare Awards amongst many others. The best part it- every time you watch it, your fondness for it will grow stronger and stronger!
2) Taare Zameen Par
My personal favorite and a hands-down winner among all the films listed so far, this Aamir Khan directorial is an eye-opener for the millions of parents worldwide. The story revolves around Ishaan Awasthi, a dyslexic boy who finds it difficult to read and write at school, gets a new meaning in life when a new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh helps him discover his true identity. Aamir Khan’s character was excellently enacted, but it was Darsheel Safary, who lent the movie its soul. A winner of National Award, this film has made millions of people weep with its unusual and heart-touching content, not to forget the cult classic ‘Meri Maa’!
“Bohut ho gayi Pehelwani, ab dangal hoga”
Just when you think this was Aamir’s best performance till date, Aamir Khan comes up with a film that displays his acting prowess at a notch higher level. With Dangal, Aamir not only displayed his startling acting skills but also underwent a tremendous transformation- something which very few actors would dare to do. The story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta and Babita and led Geeta to win Gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was received with open arms by the audiences. Aamir went on to win the Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actor’ and the film became the highest grossing film domestically and the second highest grosser worldwide!
Seriously, Aamir, we couldn’t thank you more for showering these gems on Bollywood. Once again, Happy Birthday!
Gypsy soul. Unapologetic.

Great comic timing and distinctive acting have become synonymous to Boman Irani. He just owns the character he plays. Relishing his effortless performance every time on the celluloid is simply invigorating. He’s blessed with a natural talent of captivating the audience as long he’s on the screen. On the top of that, he started his film career at the age of 42 when a lot of people tend to retire from it. So, after spreading awareness of AIDS yesterday let’s revive and savor some playful yet artistic works of the Boman Irani on December the second, his birthday.
Viru Sahastrabuddhe – 3 Idiots
“Life is a race” (in his accent) sounded more like a punch than a warning. Viru Sahastrabuddhe’s conventional ways of teaching and being adamant about it, his constant terror in the premises and an epic dressing sense makes the character unforgettable. He was equally competent with the questions showered to him by Rancho. I personally loved him more than Rancho. Virus’s journey from being stubborn and indifferent to his students’ needs to melting like wax for appreciating their work moved me.
Dr. Asthana – Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
Dr. Asthana unknowingly gave a great message in the movie, which is to laugh whenever you get angry or upset. This would surely result in a healthier world. Coming to the character, Dr. Asthana again is cunning and disciplined dean of a medical college (khadoos). He has been mocked the most in the film but kept bouncing back at every situation. In the last scene, you’ll be convinced to hate him and that’s how strong Boman’s acting is.
Natu Bhai – Waqt
“ye toh kuch bhi nahi hai” (followed by an exaggerated comparison) would be Natu Bhai’s reply on every talk he is subjected to. His typically humorous and overstating analogies have the ability to make you giggle even the seventh time you hear it. However, there will be a crisp logic to those parallelisms. And that is the beauty of this person.
Advocate Rajpal – Jolly LLB
Advocate Rajpal is a cynical legal hawk who is purely influential in his state of the profession. Indifferent to the literal truth behind the case but particularly concerned about winning (also profits). His wicked and unscrupulous nature come out when a small town novice (Jolly) tries to disturb his game. The means he uses are more foul than fair. Certainly, he delivers a very dominating and powerful performance throughout the film.
Kishan Khurana – Khosla ka Ghosla
I haven’t met a lot of property brokers but if they are a bit similar to Kishan Khurana, then I guess they are fun. He’s an amusing land mafia who possess sufficiently enough power to influence cops and create fake property papers. A Cruel and strangely funny real estate shark who slyly takes hold of a common man’s property. It’s his clever acting ability that you fail to imagine anyone else whenever you hear about a plot or an estate agent.
Many a time Boman Irani’s roles would be short like in Waqt, Dostana, Bhootnath or goal but never insignificant. He would do justice to every character given to him. A former photographer and theater artist, this Parsi Dikhra has certainly carved his niche in Bollywood through his ethereal acting and generous expressions.

A movie is a vision of its director. He is the soul and heart of the movie.
There are different kinds of Director, everyone has their own limitations and comfort zone. some shows relationships conflicts, some show reality, bring changes, represents the society, some make people laugh and then there are directors who are beyond limitations, they very beautifully shows every above element along with a social message to its audience.
That one such director in our industry is Rajkumar Hirani. Over more than a decade he has directed just 4 films. But those four films have changed the way movies are made and had a huge impact on our society.
In a very cult comical way, he gave us Munnabhai M.B.B.S the movie told us about the very basic things in our life and how often we neglect them. How a degree is not the only way to save a life. Ultimately it is love which we need, to be alive. It was the first installment of Munna Bhai and Circuit and they just stamped our hearts with their chemistry. We are still waiting for third installment – “MunnaBhai Chale Amrika”
Lage Raho Munnabhai
Who would have thought where in the country of India where most of the youth started hating the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi due impractical nature of it, A director will take chance to revive it through a new twist to it. His next venture made us go back to the time and understand the real meaning of Gandhism and how today we have forgotten its relevance in today’s time and yes, there is nothing which non-violence cannot solve. Humanity, respect for all human being is above all. The best part of the film was the moment when Munna realizes that Gandhi is not real but it’s his imagination. At this very moment, Raju Hirani brilliantly establishes the fact that we don’t need magic or miracles, we just need to understand Gandhi and his philosophy and adapt it to the modern times.
His third directorial was 3 idiots, it is not just a movie, it is a lesson, it is life in itself. A movie which showed the problem of the young Indian generation, the loopholes in the education system and how we perceive engineer and doctors to be everything. Teacher, students, and parents of all generations should not dare to miss this.
His last movie as a director was pk, again a widely acclaimed and a controversial movie. It told how in name of the religion we have divided ourselves and have allowed some people to rule us, make it as a business. The movie made us realize that it is high time we should use logic and question our faith before we have faith on it.
From “Jaddu Ki Jhappi” to “Gandhigiri”. From “All is well” to “yeh wrong number hai”, Rajkumar Hirani movies gave us the life fundas in the most entertaining yet impressive ways . They have everything, a story with a social message, music, and great characters. Munna Bhai, Circuit, Rancho and PK. There are very few people who have the art to showcase everything in 3 hours and even help us ponder, change ourselves for better us.
Thank You Mr. Hirani for providing Bollywood classical cinema. Happy Birthday sir!
